What important to pet owners about pet first aid? I am looking into how much people would like to know about pet first aid. What are the most important when it comes to their pets and emergencies?

Courtney replied: "For me, the most important thing is to know the number and location of the emergency vet. I don't personally carry a first aid kit for my dogs, even though I probably should. If I were to put a kit together, it would most likely include rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting, gauze, a tensor-type bandage like vet wrap, a tourniquet, a sheet or towel for transporting an injured animal, and something to make a make-shift muzzle. I know some people who carry a variety of drugs for sedation and such, but it really is much safer to let the real vets work with medication. It would probably be a good idea to have a cellphone handy as well, just in case you are caught in an emergency while on a walk."

Is the Red Cross pet first aid class worth it? I'm interested in taking the pet first aid class that it offered by the Red Cross. I'm curious to know if it is worth it or if is just like a how to wrap your pet in a towel before you rush him off to the vet kinda thing. I don't know a ton about pet first aid, but I also don't want to spend $32 and 4 hours for nothing.

blackberrycobbler61@yahoo.com replied: "I've never heard of that class, but if there is one I'm sure it will be worth it, I'm a pet lover and time and money is not important it's if my pet can get the help it needs I love my pet just as I do any other family member."

Huh? replied: "They will also teach you CPR on a model of a dog, but it applies to other species too. I just had to use the rescue breathing on my 6 month old ferret. Thankfully I had read up on how to do that. That and me being trained on adults, children and infants helped, but I wish I would've taken that class. Anyhow, I got the little fert breathing again. He was in respiratory arrest after being almost crushed by a heavy piece of furniture. I got him stabilized enough to get to the vet where he was getting treatment for the ensuing shock. The vet also took x-rays and my lil carpet shark made it. That happened about a week and a half ago and I have been telling people ever since that I think those classes are worth more than what you pay for them, especially if you have pets. Hey, you never know, you might save a life some day."

petmum replied: "YES... and hard to get into...sign up before the class fills up!"

Janice L replied: "Definately! Sign up now! You'll learn all sorts of useful info - CPR on animals, correct bandaging, etc. It won't be a waste of time! Plus, if you ever want to start pet-sitting, you can use your certification !"

Does the Red Cross offer pet first aid classes in your town? They just started to here and I thought it was a great idea. They offer rescue breathing and CPR and how to look for signs of stomach distention. It's only a 4 hour class. I think it's important for all pet owners to know. Do they offer it where you live?

Lilla replied: "yes these classes are offered where i live. wee also have dog Yoga classes available. (Doga) they are really great. it is yoga for the dog and owner to do together. me and my baby love it."

Alyssa R replied: "Not that I know of."

Where can I get PET first-aid and CPR certified? The Red-Cross gives booklets... but where can I actually get certified for animal/pet first-aid? Thanks!

hoppykit replied: "Call the humane society or a vet clinic."

margecutter replied: "Red Cross actually offers classes at select locations. Check it out here - maybe there is one near you: Or try here: Actually, I did a search on WebCrawler (my favorite search engine) and got a lot of results for classes in specific areas. Try searching for "pet first aid and CPR classes" and see if any of them are offered in your area. Good luck!"

But Inside I'm Screaming replied: "Most Red Cross offices offer both, for pets and humans-just give them a call."

TAKE IT!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!" they teach you how to handle a first aid emergency as well as what to keep in your first aid kit I love that they show you what to do with pictures and videos, and they cover alot of stuff that will keep your pet alive during an emergency for example: how to provide CPR, how to treat shock, etc... the list goes on please, at least consider taking this course, I'm a vet tech student, and in my opinion this course would be beneficial to all pet owners"

With so many questions about sick and hurt pets. How many of you have a Pet First Aid Kit? If you have pets it's a good thing to have on hand! Good to have in your car and at home....... I asked because I just think it's a good thing to have on hand for our pets. I have them for all my pets, dogs, cats and horse. I just really wanted to get the word out, that it's good to be prepared.

amber replied: "I wouldn't say I actually have a pets first aid kit made up, per say, but I would not hestitate to use human bandages, antiseptic cream or whatever was necessary to help one of my pets should it become injured. Plus the vet's is around the corner so I guess I am luckier than most!"

mary replied: "Yes, I have my pets own medical box, which holds their worm pills, flea treatments, laxatives, and medications. I also keep ipecac syrup to make them vomit, if they eat something poisonous."

catmd22 replied: "I have a homemade first aid kit. Did you want to know just how many people have them or what to have in them..It depends on what type of animal as well. Although a lot of items are very useful for all, like vet wrap, disinfectant, etc.."

iloveeeyore replied: "Yes, I have a pet first aid kit. I think it is extremely important to know how to take care of your dog in case of emergency. I also have the numbers of local vets and 24 hr vet clinics in my car AND in my house."

punkbun03 replied: "of coarse i do!! each has their own tote bag full of grooming, first aid, and spare toys in case of travel. don't leave home without the dogs stuff. the house rabbit and guinea pig never leave home except for the vet."

Do you have a Pet First Aid Kit? Are you prepared for a pet emergency? You can buy a kit or make your own. Even some minimal supplies can save your pet till it can get to the vet ! This is not an ad, I don't sell things, just suggesting a good idea. ebay has some for sale or you can google pet first aid kit or dog first aid kit and find several. I would probably buy one and add to it. My friend's kit helped us stabilize my dog's 2 broken front legs till we got to the emergency vet. The vet was impressed we'd done such a good job setting the legs for him.

incognena replied: "It's a very good idea - I'm starting to stock up on gauze, medical tape, and the like just in case."

paintedrain2 replied: "I do not have one. I have pet-specific antibiotic cream, for scratches and minor wounds, but that's about it. It's all I ever had to use."

walkinglady replied: "It is a good idea. I've had one for years and keep it stocked with gauze, tape, vet-flex, antiobiotic creams, scissors, thermometer, sterile pads, Variton cream and Rescue Remedy. There's been many a time I've needed it."

colin-irene D replied: "yes i have three emergency kits as i have two macaws..two cats,,and a g,s,d i have to cater for all events,"

DaveSFV replied: "Not specifically. I do have items on hand that are for my dogs. These include benedryl, hydrogen peroxide, baby aspirin and this is very important and something every dog owner should have, this book: "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" by Delbert G. Carlson DVM and James M. Giffin, MD. It is a 423 page hard bound book with excellent content."

shivercraft replied: "I got one pet and one for me as well! I am trying to train my dog to perform first aid, but she feels whenever I do stupid things, pain is God's way of telling me to smarten the hell up."

greekman replied: "Have carried one in the trunk of my car for 20 years. Filled out by the vet and restocked anually for expired items by the same vet. I work with detection dogs and accidents, although rear, do happen. Better ready then sorry."

Clarissa replied: "Yeah, it is a good idea and I wish I had one for my new puppy. Are there actually Pet First Aid Kits? If there is, could you give me a place to buy one. Anyways, we are going traveling this summer and might take the puppy, I didn't think of a P.F.A.K. (lol). Thanks for making the idea."

Terrier replied: "I don't have a pet first aid kit. I'd never seen them on sale in pet shops so just assumed there was no such thing. (I hadn't thought about taking the "human first aid kit" either though tbh!!) I've always had the vet's number in my mobile phone, but I suppose he'd be able to be more use if I had something with me that I could at least patch up my GH until he got proper medical attention. Thanks for the posting! VERY useful."
